December 2010 – News from Maio
- Vila do Maio has been re-named “Cidade do Maio – City of Maio”. Month by month, the housing project behind the girls high school extends its reach a bit further. Empty plots are being filled and, by and by, city dwellings replace the old run-down cabins. A little city on the make!
- A touch of sophistication is added right now by a holiday apartment complex on the city beach of the “Cidade”, featuring a restaurant, swimming pools and a high wall around it. But for those who like the alternative scene, nature shows its splendours the minute they leave town and open themselves to the surprising diversity of the island paradise and its unspoilt beaches.
- This summer we had again ample rains, so that the wells are filled with precious water. The farmers extend their fields with new confidence, and the island still wears its coat of green.
- Supplies are run more efficiently now, so that the occasional shortages are a thing of the past. While the “Sotavento” now transfers passengers once a week, the “Tres de Janeiro” is totally dedicated to bringing in the supplies. What a relief.
- “Halcyonair”, the Cape Verde airline, adds a new series of flights to those of the TACV, on a trial basis. You won’t find them on the internet, but they run Sunday: Sal - Maio - Praia and back; Monday, Thursday and Friday: Praia - Maio and back, subject to changes. Call: 00238 – 2412324.
- Steven and Janette offer sports diving on Maio! Info: www.capeverdediving.com / sunfish.scuba@yahoo.com / Tel. 00238 - 9549562. The friendly English couple show their fellow-divers the colourful diversity of the submarine world.
- Excellent chefs regale their guests in the Maio restaurants!
- What is not new? Friendly people, lonely beaches and heavenly peace!
